about

This is my COVID song, written just a few weeks after the global quarantine began in March 2020. It was a terrifying time when I felt helpless and alone. As an act of survival, I tried to look ahead to a time when the pandemic was behind us and imagined what we’d say. How would we describe this time? What scared us, enraged us and inspired us? What stories would we tell to the generations that follow? There is an American inclination to ignore history, but I hope that we’ll be able to hold both the grief and the resilience of this time in the stories that we’ll tell.

WE’LL TELL STORIES
Lyrics and music by Mary Lou Fulton

We’ll tell stories about these days
When the fear kept rolling over us
In waves and waves
When the worst was yet to come
When there was no place to run

We’ll tell stories…
We’ll tell stories...

We’ll tell stories about the news
Of leaders who inspired us
And others who were cruel
Watching sons and daughters die
As the numbers climbed and climbed

We’ll tell stories…
We’ll tell stories...

And in the darkest of times
The heroes laid their bodies on the line
Young and old answered the call
All for one and one for all

We’ll tell stories about that night
When a brighter day finally was in sight
We opened arms and doors again
And walked together hand in hand
Opened arms and doors again
And walked together hand in hand

We’ll tell stories…
We’ll tell stories…
We’ll tell stories…
We’ll tell stories…
