about

I wrote The Red, White and Blue because we need new and better patriotic music that reflects the times we live in. Growing up in small-town Arizona, I believed in the American flag as a symbol of pride and possibility for all of us. But over the years, I became wary of the flag as it was takenup by right-wingers to represent a vision of America that didn’t include me. I wondered, “Does that woman wearing the flag shirt hate my mom because she’s Mexican? Does that guy in the flag cap want to take away my right to control my own body?” I’d fallen for the propaganda. I wrote The Red, White and Blue to reclaim the flag for myself and for all of us. Written a few weeks before the Jan 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, the lyrics continue to ring true.

THE RED,WHITE AND BLUE
Lyrics and music by Mary Lou Fulton

When I was five years old
I led the rodeo parade
Proudly waved the flag
As the marching band played
People stood and cheered
I thought it was for me
Til mama told me later
The love was for our country

The red, white and blue
Belongs to you and me
It flies for everyone
Who dreams of being free
The red, white and blue
Reminds us what could be
A more perfect union
A new history

Now I see people
Wave the flag just like a gun
Demanding to know
Whose side are you on?
I’m on the side of justice
On the side of liberty
And I’m not going to let them
Take my flag from me

The red, white and blue
Belongs to you and me
It flies for everyone
Who dreams of being free
The red, white and blue
Reminds us what could be
A more perfect union
A new history

Many times our nation
Has burned with fear and rage
But the people never gave up
Kept finding a way
And after the darkest night
Comes the brightest day

So let’s start our own parade
And speak up when we see
Hatred and lies
Disguised as loyalty
Defend our nation’s promise
Defend democracy
And hold on to our flag
From sea to shining sea

The red, white and blue
Belongs to you and me
It flies for everyone
Who dreams of being free
The red, white and blue
Reminds us what could be
A more perfect union
A new history
